A Snapshot of Hunger

Second Harvest provides food to 21 neighborhood food banks in Spokane County that are serving more than 15,000 people every month. For two decades, Second Harvest has been reaching out to these clients to tell the story of hunger in the community.

Second Harvest’s annual client survey is the longest running food bank survey of its kind nationwide. Thanks to generous cooperation by hundreds of emergency food clients, the annual survey is an important tool that helps Second Harvest gain deeper insight into the lives the people served. The 20th Annual Client Survey reveals some compelling findings about the faces of hunger in Spokane:

  • 39 percent of emergency food clients are children, 18 years old and younger.
  • 11 percent of clients are seniors, age 55 and older.
  • A quarter of all households are headed by single parents, of those, 83 percent are single mothers.
  • 62 percent of clients have lived in Spokane County for more than 10 years.
  • 94 percent of clients are very low income, earning less than 50 percent of the median family income in Spokane County ($2,046 per month or less for a family of three).
  • 75 percent of client households report income below the federal poverty level.
  • 41 percent of client households have at least one adult working full or part time.
  • 65 percent of parents have gone without food so their children could eat. Almost 45 percent say this happens daily or weekly.
  • 60 percent of people in households without children go without food when they run low on groceries. Of those, 55 percent skipped meals daily or weekly.
