Partner Spotlight: Royal City Food Bank

Royal City Food Bank in Grant County serves about 600 families per month. It’s run by an all-volunteer crew, and some of them have been there 20 years. Royal City also hosts a clothing bank.

They've recently seen a spike in client visits, said Sharon Chesterman, who’s been volunteering at the food bank for 10 years. Most weeks, they serve between 125 and 150 families, but in January it was closer to 200.

“We're seeing younger people, some homeless, but we have singles, husbands and wives, and families,” she said.

“One of the reasons we might be seeing more clients is the cold and snowy winter we are having.  There are acres and acres of orchards in our area, and some of the workers have not been able to work,” she said. “We are only open on Tuesdays from 12:30 to 3 p.m.  Always there is a line waiting for us to open.”

Rock-star volunteers: Dorothy Lee, director and Sharon Chesterman, vice-chair
