Many thanks to the food banks for their hospitality and to the
volunteers and respondents who helped with gathering information for
this year's client survey.
A special thank you to John Veysey, Mike Harstan and Bill Smith of AREVA, who generously donated materials and time to make three new grocery trees for Second Harvest. The trees are used to hold pre-packed grocery bags at Yokes Fresh Market food drives throughout the year.
Thanks to the generosity of Pasco farmer Noel Price and a group of
Fields of Grace volunteers, 7,060 pounds of farm-fresh corn is on its
way to people in need. Price opened his cornfield for gleaning by the
volunteers on Aug. 5. Second Harvest has also received over 22,000
pounds of potatoes from local farmers and Fields of Grace volunteers.
We appreciate all of the dedicated people who participated in this
amazing effort!
ConAgra Foods Lamb Weston raised enough money to donate 37,572 pounds of food to Second Harvest as a result of Free Fries Fryday,
which took place on July 23. Local participating restaurants gave away
25,680 servings of free fries to customers, with Lamb Weston agreeing to
donate $.10 for each serving. Lamb Weston also pledged $1 to Second
Harvest for everyone who became a fan the Free Fries Fryday Facebook page.
More than 3,694 new fans signed up on Facebook by July 23.
Additionally, more than 600 pounds of food was collected through special
food donation bins at participating Albertsons stores in the Tri-Cities. A big thank you to everyone who participated.
The 12th Annual Christmas in July Food Drive was on July 22 from noon through 6 p.m. The staff of Positive Life Radio encouraged the community to bring nonperishable food items to drop-off
locations to benefit Second Harvest. This year's event raised over
11,112 pounds of food. Many thanks to participants and donors.
The Yok'es What's for Lunch Food Drive, held July 9, raised 4,719 pounds of food aimed at providing kid-friendly foods to stock the shelves of local food banks during summer break. Thank you to Yoke’s Fresh Market staff, KVEW and all the volunteers for making this food drive a success.
The fourth annual Drive Out Hunger Golf Tournament at Sun Willows in Pasco on June 25 helped raise funds for Second
Harvest's $2 million capital campaign. Thank you to Jackie and staff at
Sun Willows, event sponsors, volunteers and participants who made this
event a success.
Local teams built structures made entirely out of nonperishable food during Fight Hunger – Build Hope 2010. A total of 7,829 pounds was collected to benefit Second Harvest Tri-Cities and its local network of food banks.
Local judges were Kennewick Mayor Pro-Tem Sharon Brown, Kennewick Police Sgt. Randy Maynard; KVEW-TV anchors Crystal Costa and Jason Valentine, and Volunteer Mike Watkins. They voted for winners in the following categories:
